About this deal

A number of the characteristics in this post-apocalyptic tale will strike familiar cords, but that would actually be the work of a long chain of often inferior copycat authors who are mimicking previous themes. Unfortunately, making the gas cost him the time and resources he needed to make his insulin, so he's another casualty of the defense of the nuclear plant. This final part of the book is almost like a satire of right-wing attitudes - except that it's painfully clear that it's in earnest. Now originally I had this marked as a re-read but do you know, if I had read it, I didn't remember it one little bit so I'm guessing I have really never read this before, which I have to say is very remiss of me, as this is a very good book, that's very good not great. I kind of thought the people eating made more sense at the end of the plot line (as a ritual) than as a food solution, but, you’re right, it was bad.

After the strike the second story begins, and it is as riveting as the telling of the strike and preparation for it are.Monumental devastation will sweep across the globe if the newly-discovered Hamner-Brown comet collides with the one major obstacle in its path: Earth. The ranchers are White and Conservative, although joined by one Exceptional Black Man who literally says, at one point, disparaging equal-rights activists "I have all the equality I've ever wanted.

I can only pray that later generations would carry it forward after conquering California and finding any intact libraries. People TODAY who care nothing for anyone but themselves and would waste you for the Air Jordon's on your feet. In fact, much of his writing since the 1970s has been in collaboration, particularly with Pournelle, Steven Barnes, Brenda Cooper, or Edward M. Second part as event happens and the valley community is set up and organized is actually interesting. He would have been able to ride that wave as far as it took him (several miles inland) had it not been for an inconveniently placed apartment building.

Later, they descend into I'm a Humanitarian territory, and use forced cannibalism ("You can eat it, or you can be eaten. They get along quite well with the Americans, and for the most part, the four of them are more loyal to each other than to anyone else. On the other hand, there are quite a few things about it that are still freaking fantastic, such as the science and the emotional impact of the comet strike. Her one negative comment was that the pro-technology pitch might turn off some readers but "all in all it's a good book, if not a great one". If the outer sentry raises both hands over his head, this is the signal for the inner sentry to shoot the person at the gate, presumably because that is the one gesture least likely to get you killed if someone is pointing a gun at you.

Still, this started out in the three-star range, and stayed there for about the first 40% of the book. If you take a belay at the start of the climbing proper, a 30m rope will get you to the belay and back (or at least to "a" belay - if there is any more climbing above this (a fixed 'biner) then I wouldn't bother, it looks like a cheese fest). Some of the race issues can be read charitably, some of the characters are racist and that wouldn't change after a comet hit. For to you Kingdoms and their armies are things mighty and enduring, but to him they are but toys of the moment, to be overturned with the flick of a finger. But the fact that the band of cannibals just so happens to be the black people was quite off-putting. There’s the rich, eccentric discoverer of the comet, a documentary film maker, a senator, his daughter, a preacher, a secretary, a power plant executive, a stalker, the leader of a burglary ring, a mail carrier, various astronauts-in-training (of all of these, there are two black men, two white women and one Russian woman represented, and just guess who the secretary and the burglar represent)… I discovered there was a good reason for a list of characters at the beginning of the book. The entire first third is character introduction and buildup to the comet strike, then the second third is the strike and immediate aftermath, and the final section is the extended aftermath, including a kind of quick action climax that seems out of place compared to the general tone of suspense in the rest of the book.
