About this deal

In addition to Castles of Mad King Ludwig, Isle of Skye is likely to be compared to Carcassonne, and while the two share tile laying/landscape making in common, I wouldn’t say they are all that similar. The rules are simple and can be explained in three minutes or less, yet there is lots of room for tense decisions and clever play.

Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King is a tile-laying board game [1] designed by Alexander Pfister and Andreas Pelikan that was published in 2015. Personally, I can definitely recommend it as a light 2-player entertainment, with some decent (but not extensive) depth, and I am sure it will be just as good with more players. The box already includes the family friendly Druid expansion, the Tunnel tiles mini expansion, as well as Boderlands Module mini expansion and offers hours and hours of gameplay. It always puts the players in a situation that requires unique decision-making processes like no other game has. This was difficult to do, but it gave this goal a new sense of immediacy, and some players decided to focus on other goals instead. Everyone then places the tiles they ended up with, trying to build an island compatible with the scoring criteria set up at the beginning as well as one likely to generate sufficient income to offer fiscal flexibility in future turns. This variety adds to an already delightful game that works at every player count and is worthy of a place in any collection.

I would closely compare this to Carcassonne (as the classic tile laying game), but here rather being limited to placing a meeple on the tile you lay, you are able to build for multiple strategies each round. It’s a fantastic addition, which is great for Big Box owners, bad for early adopters, but also bad for Druids. The screens have to be assembled each game, but this isn’t a big deal–they are sturdier for it–and they have a helpful player aid on the back of them. The biggest flaw in my view would be that this is neither a “filler” game nor is it long/complex enough to build a fulfilling strategy like many other engine builder / Euro games (e. Presentation wise Isle of Skye has the standard Digidiced menu systems and look which we are accustomed to, this means that everything is clear and easy to manage on even a smaller touch screen. Many people will pick up the Spiel des Jahres winners as a matter of course – they’re generally not looking for experimental design or striking innovation. What they don’t add, in other words, is any sense that the designers were remotely interesting in taking risks with their design. Isle of Skye is a game that takes the tile laying and terrain matching aspects of Carcasonne and fuses it with a clever auction system to create an elegant, relaxed and and fun little number for two to five players.

Published in 2015, my playing group and I have already encountered and played a long list of new games. It also doesn't add any more mechanics, keeping the game on the same level of complexity as the base game.I’ve read forum posts questioning the “catch-up” mechanism in the game–starting with the third round, players get money for each person ahead of them on the score track. When leaving your castle, build up the Isle of Skye by adding green hills, perfect beaches and mountain ranges.
