About this deal

He talks to fishermen, beachcombers, surfers and other locals about living their lives by the tides, and explores his own personal emotional connection to the water.

While I would recommend this to most readers who enjoy creative nonfiction, I would highly recommend it to people who have spent any significant time living near the water. Whether we realise it or not, its health is key to all of our lives, whether we live in earshot of the sea or we’re entirely landlocked. I read this at my home by the sea in New Jersey, sometimes on the beach on lovely sunny days and sometimes from a rocking chair inside my house, looking out at the wind and rain. He describes the feeling he gets by the sea as akin to “what I imagine the cathedral builders sought to achieve when they lifted the clerestories to the sky, creating a huge space to inspire awe and to humble, to lift the heart, a space filled with light and wonder”.It’s the connections that draw me to them: a mangled dragon’s wing to the child who played with that dragon twenty years earlier; a roll of birch bark to a tree that fell some 4,000 miles away.

In the specifics of these livelihoods and their rich histories and traditions, Wyl Menmuir captures the universal human connection to the ocean’s edge.

Description Description Wyl Menmuir’s The Draw of the Sea is a beautifully written and deeply moving portrait of the Cornish Coast and the people who make their livings there, examining the ephemeral but universal pull the sea holds over the human imagination. I loved reading about various people, their livelihoods and the way their lives have been shaped by the sea. Enjoyable read,”The Draw of the Sea” which is filled with interesting people, places, sea and land creatures, livelihoods, discoveries, facts, memorable moments and various reflections why so many are drawn to the sea. Living in Britain it is impossible to escape the sea and everybody here has to an extent a meaningful relationship with it.
