About this deal

Elizabeth’s loneliness is ever present though never overplayed, and her difficult ties with her extended family oscillate between frustration, anger, regret and resignation. Despite my reservations however A Keeper is engaging, well-written and wryly humorous and despite feeling Elizabeth’s character lacked depth I found it a very worthwhile read. I'm not completely certain that I didn't miss something there, but I don't really feel like I can be bothered going back to re-read and find out). As she clears out her mother’s personal effects, she discovers a bundle of letters that appear to be from the father she has never known.

I read Graham Norton's first novel mostly out of curiosity but found the writing very good, now after reading this book I will look out for his novels for the entertaining emotive writing. The snarky ex-husband didn't go over well either and actually just disappeared out of the end of the story, never to be heard from again. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Overall however I was just a little bemused by the abrupt conclusion and the takeaway felt a little too simplistic. We know from the first page (the chapter known as "Before") that a POV character is in great distress after some type of turbulent event in which an official vehicle has arrived.Urged on by a friend she answers a lonely hearts ad in the Farmers’ Journal and meets Edward Foley, a taciturn farmer who lives in an isolated cottage with his domineering mother.

The pre-loved books are carefully cleaned and maintained offering a wide variety of general and specialist titles from children's to adults.

The side characters - I could have done with more information on the family feud with Elizabeth, her aunt, uncle, and cousin. She is dealing w/the loss of her mom and also with her teen son, whose situation is complicated because she is raising him alone. She has very little there, unpleasant memories, items of small value, but all that changes when she finds a small stash of letters telling a story that she was never told. The book goes back and forward in time telling the story from both Elizabeth in present day and her mother Patricia in the past.

But nobody seems to know anything about Edward Foley, and the deeper she digs she discovers that she knows nothing about where she came from.
