She comes to Kinsey, who takes the case and begins the slow process of unraveling the truth hidden by eight years. Otto Prenzler, "Forward", The Best Mystery Stories of the Year 2021, edited by Lee Child, The Mysterious Press, New York, p. Once again, she breaks genre formulas, giving us a twisting, complex, surprise-filled, and totally satisfying thriller. Autoarea a inceput Seria Alfabetului in 1982 si pana in 2016 a ajuns la litera T - "T is for trespass".

I have seen the `Alphabet books' around before, but I think the fact that Grafton is already up to something like V or W has always put me off starting them, but after seeing the Kindle book of A is for Alibi for only 99p, I thought I'd try it. The mystery itself is believable and when we learn the truth about the deaths, we see that the motives behind everything make sense. Her lean face had filled out some, probably the result of prison food with its high starch content, but she still had the ethereal look that had made the accusation of murder seem so incongruous at the time. We get an intimate look into her mind as she interviews the suspects and slowly unravels the mystery. I had to go take some photographs of a crack in a sidewalk for an insurance claim and I left the office shortly after she did, taking my VW out the freeway.

The book is narrated by Kinsey Millhone herself and opens with a perfect intrpoduction of who she is. A is For Alibi tells the credible story of a set of deaths and the people involved with the victims. She makes her share of mistakes too, and she’s not above telling a lie here or there to cover herself.

While going through a "bitter divorce and custody battle that lasted six long years", Grafton imagined ways to kill or maim her ex-husband. Kinsey Millhone lives in Santa Teresa, California and is a rebellious and independent detective who has no thrived as a police officer, so set up on her own. Of those, I have the first 15 on my Kindle, so Kinsey and I will be joined at the hip through letter O. The narrative is delivered in a matter-of-fact manner, which is nice, but please, show some emotion! In collaboration with her husband, Steven Humphrey, she also adapted the Agatha Christie novels A Caribbean Mystery and Sparkling Cyanide for television and co-wrote A Killer in the Family and Love on the Run.

Add to that how often the woman drinks (three glasses of wine at least in one day--see pages 227, 244, 248! Kinsey Millhone, an average detective with a conscience and a relaxed lifestyle, lands a whopper of a case to open this first of many, many books. Chip Grafton was a municipal bond attorney in Kentucky who pursued a secondary career as a crime novelist, winning minor acclaim for four novels.

Because Nikki had been convicted by a jury who purportedly weighed the evidence presented by both the prosecuting and defense attorneys, she wasn't expecting to discover any new evidence.
