About this deal

The soldiers are equipped by each province or city from its own armouries and therefore the quality and condition of the weapns and equipment can vary greatly. They care about compliance with the laws and in times of war they are the main forces of the Empire. It is rare for troopers within a given regiment to be armoured in the same way - some might have mail, others breastplates or simple leather, whilst others may have no armour at all.

One of the most common types of infantry within the Empire, the Halbediers have proven time and again the effectiveness of their weapon, giving the Empire both offensive and defensive capabilities. Officers are not required to wear the uniform and are famous for dressing in colours that starkly contrast with the regiment’s colours, as a show of bravery. The cheapest way to draw attention is to exaggerate, because humans are naturally curious about odd things, the abnormal. For making you look, and keeping you looking, the heroic models are making you not see all the “boring” true scale models of other companies.I currently run 2x units of 30x in a 5x6 formation, meaning they can hold up an enemy for quite a bit of time, which gives me a good chance to flank them with each spearmens detchment of 15x Swordsmen, but have also surprised many units by how much damage they can potential cause with 16x attacks, not to mention 10x attacks from the swordsmen.

Since the time of Sigmar, the Empire has maintained armies of professional soldiers who defend the Emperor's lands. Another way to look at that is that only three of the torso types can easily (without cutting arms off) take a command option. I sized up the models for their possible paint job hoping to gain some inspiration as I’ve actually been struggling with what colour scheme to do my Empire army in – my general is from Marienburg with its Red, Blue and Yellow colours but really you can do anything you want as they’re all ‘mercenaries’.

The torsos are in various degrees of armour which might create issues with WYSIWYG given the fairly limited options available in the army book.

See, generally GW’s plastic kits are scant with torsos but over-flowing with weapons options, and often they are weapons very specific to the setting, such as the Hochland Rifle. There are a great many types of Imperial troopers, each trained to wield and master a particular weapon in battle. Deserters can live well, using whatever money they have saved to set themselves up in some quiet corner of the Old World, or beyond. The more I studied the models the more I was daunted by the prospect of painting up big blocks of 30 or 40 of them.

There are a few bug bears, like the banner being a bit crap and demanding an instant trade with the one from the Hand Gunners box (see next review), not enough head choice (e.
